6/9/09 Editing Shinedown for MTV

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Today I am working on the edits for Shinedown. I directed a live shoot in Atlanta and now it must be cut to 5 songs that will be edited into a 30min. program on MTV2. MTV sent a 3 page list of all the requirements for leaving commercial spots, slates, and black, along with final video formats and so on… should be a fun edit. I don’t know the air date yet, but I’m told it will be sometime in July. I will try and keep you posted. I’m sure the both of you that are reading this will be on the edge of your seats!!

4/15/09 Jonny Diaz & Shinedown

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’ve been staying pretty busy preparing for 2 projects that are coming up. The first one is a music video shoot for Jonny Diaz and his song “Beautiful You”. The second is a live shoot in atlanta for the band Shinedown. Both Music videos and Live shoots take a lot of prep work to make sure they come off smoothly so it is interesting as I toggle from one to the other renting gear, planning, and prepping. The Jonny Diaz video will be shot in a studio, I won’t tell you the concept behind it yet, you’ll have to wait and see the finished video!!! The Shinedown video shoot is taking place in Atlanta, it will be a total of 9 cameras all HD. I’ve been talking to the band since the first time I worked with them about doing this, so I’m excited that it is actually going to happen. The final cut of the show will be on MTV2 in the not so distant future, so keep an eye out for it.

3/30/09 Uploading more video content

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I have been using Virb to embed the videos for this website, the only problem is that they only allow 5 uploads per week, so each Monday I have been uploading 5 new videos to the site…today I added 5 new ones so check them out and let me know what you think.

3/20/09 Final Deadline Day for Building 429 video “Always”.

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Today I am wrapping up the final tweaks of color correction and film treatment to the music video…I’m not sure what day it will come out onto websites and wherever else it could be seen, but I’m sure it will be soon.  I’ll have it posted on my site as soon as the label will allow it.  It has been a learning process working on the odd work flow from Red footage into Final Cut Pro, to Color and back again.  But I think the video looks great, the footage looks amazing once you add the color correction….after editing the footage in the non treated look for a few weeks, it does tend to make you question how good it will look, but the moment you step into color and crush the blacks, throw in a dash of contrast and tweak it out, it looks quite amazing.  Let me know what you all think of the final product.

2/24/09 Day 2 of shooting the Building 429 video for “Always”

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

This morning came extremely early since I didn’t get to bed till about 1a.m. prepping for the next day.  I had to get up at about 6a.m. and get to home depot.  I was building a “rain rig” for the last scene of the day, I had used a similar rain rig on the Barlow girl music video and it worked really well.   Then I met at location 1 with 2 gallons of coffee in hand for the cast and crew.  Location 1 was at another friends house that we set dressed to look really trashed and unkept.  We shot at this location till a little after lunch and then packed up and headed to location 2.  Location 2 was an outdoor scene near the venue 12th and Porter.  It was here that I hit a snag that I thought might ruin my final shots of the day.  I had set up access to someones water supply via some hose and my rain rig.  When I got to the location I found out that I would not be able to use the water supply after all.  I had to quickly get on the phone with landscaping companies and mobile car detailers (who often carry large quantities of water in their trucks)  I finally got a mobile detailer named Roscoe Jones at A-1 Mobile Detailing (hire him) he does mobile detailing and pressure washing.  He came to the rescue and stayed from about 4p.m. till we finished at about 11p.m.  I didn’t get to use my rain rig, but I think his nozzle settings worked well on his pressure wash.  All in all, I think the day was a success and we wrapped the shoot at about 11p.m.  I got home at around 12:30 after cleaning up and breaking down.  I believe the video will look great when it is all said and done.  Check out the photos on my photo page to see some shots from the day.

2/23/09 Day 1 of shooting the Building 429 video for “Always”

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Today started off at 7a.m. as I got everything together for the 1st day of shooting.  Our first location was in a subdivision in Franklin, we shot out by a swing set and then did a few set ups inside the house of some friends from church.  This is my first experience shooting on the hot new camera called Red.  It is an amazing camera, the footage has to be treated very much like film, it won’t look really amazing until we color correct it all in post, but even in its RAW form it looks pretty great.  Around Dinner time, we moved from that location to INO Records (Building 429’s record label).  We dressed the label up to look like an adoption agency and shot the remainder of the day there.  Day 1 was good, we wrapped at about 10:30p.m. and headed home to catch a few hours of sleep before day 2.  Check my photos page to see some shots from the day.

2/21/09 Shinedown/MTV2 shoot

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Today I went to a place here in Nashville called Soundcheck, it’s a place where bands set up their touring rig and rehearse songs, lighting and sound before they take it all out on the road.  I got hired to shoot an interview with Shinedown for an episode of Rock the Duece on MTV2.  They are really great guys to talk to and the shoot went well.  MTV sent me a list of specs on how to shoot, it was lame that I had to shoot 480i in 4:3 aspect ratio, I had the footage looking really great and then had to change the settings.  Look for my footage on the show.
