The first day is always an adjustment period in a new country, well anywhere different I suppose. There is a certain rhythm to life, and each culture has it’s own. It’s amazing how quickly we adapt to these rhythms, we are built to converse and to breed social exchange. In the states it seems as though it might be impossible at times to learn a new language or to be able to communicate on any real level with someone who does not speak english. But the reality is that when we are thrown into situations where communication is difficult, and you take the time to listen, we are quickly able to learn and interpret the way we once did as children..the mind is like a sponge taking everything in, soaking up the culture, the language, and the visuals…the first day is spent breathing and drinking it in and becoming intoxicated by it. We walk around in an almost hypnotic trance trying to interpret that which is unfamiliar… to create a comfortability out of an uncomfortable situation. The only translation that is instantaneous…. Love. The children are eager to pour out their love and to receive it from us. Like family members seeing each other again after a long time without, they come running up and embracing as though we’ve known each other for years. Relationship is the key to life, without it, we are pointless. When shooting any video of any kind, I am attempting to create a relational experience for the viewer, if I’ve not created something that touches and/or relates to you on some level, I’ve failed.
